Fat Kid Yoga-Book Club Starts Next Week!

I’m so excited to launch our book club next week! The first selection is Yoga Rising: 30 Empowering Stories from Yoga Renegades for Every Body edited by Melanie C. Klein. This collection includes essays by Jessamyn Stanley, Dianne Bondy, Jacoby Ballard, Jivana Heyman among other leaders in contemporary yoga.

Each week, I’ll post discussion prompts here in our Patreon community. We’ll also discuss the book during our community chats on September 9 and 23. Yoga Rising is available in paperback and e-book options through most bookstores.

If you have suggestions for future books, send me a message or drop them in the comments below.

What you listening to? Community Thread

Hey y’all – this is our bi-weekly community thread to share music, podcasts, and videos.

I’ve been loving the Accessible Yoga Podcast. Last week’s episode with Nicole Cardoza was amazing, and I recommend it for everyone.

I think you’ll also enjoy Michelle Cassandra Johnson’s TedX Presentation There is Not Neutral.

So, what are you listening to? Leave a comment and let us know!

Celebrate Yourself! Back to School Yoga Challenge – Day 7

Y’all, I can’t think of a better way to end our week than with Heather Small’s Proud.

I’m keeping it simple today, so please leave a comment and let us know one thing you are proud of this week. As for me, I’m proud of myself for getting a new sign up system for my live classes figured out (in addition to starting a new semester and leading a yoga challenge this week lol). It’ll go live in September, but you can get a sneak peek here.

I hope you all have a great weekend, and for those of us on the Gulf Coast… stay safe!

Go with the Flow? Back to School Yoga Challenge – Day 6

Y’all – this post has literally been an all day production! Our theme is to go with the flow and find your edge without going over and technology sure helped me practice that! Needless to say, this post is finally up.

Today, I offer you two flow sequences that move through standing on two legs to balancing on one foot. I hope you have as much fun practicing these sequences as I did filming them. These are among my absolute favorite postures! Leave a comment and let us know which poses you tried and how they made you feel.

Or if journaling is more your speed today, I offer you the prompt, “how do you know when you on the edge?”

Rest

Today’s theme is simple: rest. Take 5, 10, 15 minutes, maybe even an hour, and allow your mind and body to rest.

There’s no practice video, but honestly, you don’t need me to tell you how to rest. You already know how to do that! If you need some inspiration, you can revisit some of the practices from earlier this week. On Sunday, we practiced heart-opening restorative poses, and on Tuesday, I offered some restorative inversions. You can also try one of these practices.

Journaling can also be restful. And today, I’ll offer you two prompts. The first is “my top 3 self-care practices are…” take time to list and describe each one. Our second prompt is a little more creative. Take a mental vacation and plan a restful long-weekend getaway. Where would you go? What would you do? What sort of treats would you allow yourself?

Leave a comment and let me know how your practiced resting today or share your response to the journal prompt(s) with us!

And if you need a little deeper rest this evening, you can join me for a live restorative practice via Zoom at 6:30 PM CDT. Sign up at yoga practice at  https://marcsettembrino.com/classes/pop-up-restorative-practice/

Remember you can always practice with me for FREE (no questions asked) using the code IAMWELCOME.

Go Within – Back to School Yoga Challenge – Day 4

I usually start to feel frazzled on Wednesday and that’s especially true this week! Meditation is a powerful tool that allows me to reconnect with myself and let go of expectations.

Today, I offer you a short meditation practice that I often use with my sociology students. This practice is an opportunity to notice things that you might overlook as you are going about your day. As always, this challenge is truly yours – so if you’re not into guided mediations, feel free to meditate independently.

Journaling is also a powerful tool for becoming aware of one’s self and experience. Today’s prompt is “What is one thing that you learned this week?”

Yesterday, I started the Race & Equity in Yoga Training led by Kelley Palmer. Kelley is an amazing teacher and I already learned so much in just one day of the training! One thing that’s really standing out to me is how well she demonstrates what good teaching is. She invited us to practice svadhyaya with some writing exercises. I loved them so much that I used them with my graduate students last night!

I hope you’ll leave a comment and tell us about your mediation practice or about something that you learned this week.

Thank you all so much for following along in this challenge!  I’ve loved reading your comments and getting to know you better. If you haven’t already, you should definitely check out the #fatkidyogaclub

And one more thing… tomorrow’s theme is rest and so I’ve decided to offer a pop up restorative yoga practice at 6:30 PM Central Time. I’m trying out a new registration system and I’d love your help piloting it! You can sign up for the practice at: https://marcsettembrino.com/classes/pop-up-restorative-practice/

Remember you can always practice with me for FREE (no questions asked) using the code IAMWELCOME.
